Interactive Map Example: Recovery Money

Here is an interactive map that shows where the allocation of money under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, part of President Obama's stimulus, is going to each state in the USA. The act is intended to help states hit hard by the economic downturn and to help get their economies working properly again.

2009 Inauguration Map

Here is a simple, yet clear map of the middle of Washington D.C. showing the area around the Mall and the Capitol where the roads will be closed to traffic and where traffic will be restricted. Also shown are public entry points and pedestrian crossovers.

Final Project!!

Here is a map displaying all the Asian grocery stores in Fairfax County that were listed in the Yellow Pages as of 2008. This includes Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Thai, Filipino, Indian and Pakistani. The map is divided up into ten location zones: Alexandria/ Franconia, Springfield, Clifton/ Fairfax Station/ Lorton, Falls Church, Vienna/ Oakton, Fairfax/ Burke, Centreville/ Chantilly, Herndon/ Reston, and Great Falls/ McLean. I created the symbols that make a pattern around the map. The background is an image of natural paper.

Bivariate Map

Here is my bivariate map showing the percentage of each population that is black as the choropleth and the red cross symbols representing the population of each county that is uninsured medically. Before I started this map I thought there would be more of a corellation between the state's black population and the state's uninsured population. After making this map, the counties on the map with a black population over 40% were not as bad off in terms of uninsured residents than many majority-white and more racially mixed counties. However the counties with the most uninsured residents were all the state's major population centers.
